It was declared in 2010 that Doha will serve as the World Cup 2022 Tournament’s host city. In order to prepare for its “time in the sun, ” Qatar is proud to be the first Middle Eastern nation to host the World Cup. The country aimed to strike a balance between development and the environment by lowering costs and neutralizing carbon emissions. Qatar has hailed the stadium as a pioneering example of big event sustainability.
Doha decided to utilize prefabricated shipping containers and recyclable elements, many of which were carried in the shipping containers themselves in an attempt to reduce waste. The 40,000-seat Stadium designed by Spanish firm Fenwick Iribarren Architects is the first fully demountable stadium in FIFA World Cup history. Stadium 974 will be dismantled after the tournament, and its parts repurposed in sports venues across the world. There are reportedly plans for it to be used in Maldonado, Uruguay, to host the 2030 World Cup, if the country’s bid to host is successful. At this point, Kenya could also consider bidding now that we have a more convenient way of putting up a World Cup stadium.
Stadium 974 is an innovative architectural concept that has modified shipping containers to serve as restrooms, snack stands, skyboxes, and media rooms. Natural ventilation is created through the design of the stadium eliminating the need for air conditioning.
The stadium’s architecture also considered cutting down on water usage by roughly 40% by relying on natural breeze rather than artificial cooling systems because it is located on Doha’s shoreline. Stadium 974 is named after the nation’s dialing code and the number of ocean shipping containers that were utilized in its construction.
At ISM containers, we believe modular construction is the way to go. We currently refurbish shipping containers for commercial, industrial, and private properties around Africa. And we now purpose to borrow a leaf from Stadium 974, the newest trend setter stadium in town.
Why a portable stadium?
- Innovative modular construction for the stadium will be much cheaper to put up, with inflation we all look to save an extra coin.
- The shortened time needed to complete the manufacturing and building of container Stadium. Long are the days you had to wait years for stadium construction to be done.
- A container stadium would be easily portable making it convenient to borrow the stadium from county to county/ country to country therefore not needing to put many permanent stadiums in a country for them to be used once in a blue moon.
- For the stadium, green energy can be employed as an alternative form of power and energy support that not only lowers costs and promotes environmental preservation but also remains portable and dependable.
