Introduction
ISM Containers, in partnership with Lions & Kenyatta Hospital has launched a major new patient accommodation facility following the official ground-breaking, marking the beginning of a modern hybrid modular development.
The project advances a high-quality, efficient accommodation solution designed to support the region’s growing healthcare infrastructure needs.
A True Hybrid Modular Solution
It integrates two complementary construction systems, each selected for its efficiency, durability and sustainability advantages.
Multi-Storey Hostel Wing – Shipping Containers

The primary accommodation block is built using 20 ft shipping containers, fully transformed within ISM’s controlled factory environment. Each module undergoes a comprehensive refurbishment process including:
- Structural reinforcement and precise modification
- Complete insulation and thermal treatment
- Integrated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
- Full interior fit-out and finishing
Once complete, the modules are transported to site and positioned to create a multi-storey facility with minimal disruption to surrounding operations.
Administration Block – Light-Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF)
Supporting the accommodation wing is a 240 m² administration building produced using ISM’s in-house light-gauge steel framing system. The structure incorporates reception areas, offices and essential support spaces, benefiting from LGSF’s accuracy, open-span flexibility and efficient deployment.
Benefits of the Hybrid Approach
- Significantly accelerated delivery timelines compared to traditional construction
- Factory-controlled consistency, quality and hygiene standards
- Reduced on-site waste and operational disruption
This project demonstrates ISM Engineering’s ability to deliver large-scale, high-specification hybrid modular facilities tailored to the performance requirements of healthcare, government, education and industrial clients.
