Introduction
ISM Containers, a leading provider of shipping container conversion and modular building constructions, has forged a groundbreaking partnership with M-Gas, a Kenyan company focused on improving lives through the distribution of clean cooking gas. The MGAS concept is a provision of clean and affordable cooking solutions for remote locations on a Pay-As-You-Go clean cooking business making cooking with gas more accessible for urban households in developing countries. The brief was on how to combine green technology, logistics infrastructure, and clean fuel to address a major gap in the market.
This case study explores how ISM Containers’ eco-friendly solutions and modular container units have enabled M-Gas to expand its reach, improve efficiency, and promote sustainability in Kenya.
ISM Containers and M-Gas joined forces to design a last-mile distribution center for M-Gas’s LPG Cylinders and related equipment, using converted shipping containers.
The delivery team uses both Tuktuks and Motorbikes for the delivery of the cylinders, using a hub and spoke method. Full cylinders are brought to the depot from the main gas filling station. These cylinders are then loaded onto the Tuktuks and distributed with a particular zone using the motorbikes. This method allows for the most significant reach within the nominated area and allows for quick distribution and empty cylinder collection. Using this method allows for deliveries in the most inaccessible locations with informal settlements.
In line with MGAS “Green” credentials, ISM Containers developed the “Off-Grid Green” Depot. Including the supply of electric motorbikes and Tuktuks, using solar power to charge the batteries and provide power to operate the depot. This further increases MGAS’s customer reach, as they are not reliant on centralized power systems.
The collaboration between ISM Containers and M-Gaisas is a testament to the power of innovation, sustainability, and partnership in addressing pressing social and environmental challenges. By repurposing shipping containers and supporting M-Gas’s mission to provide clean cooking gas, ISM Containers has not only contributed to the growth of their partner but has also played a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for countless Kenyan households.
